M O V I N G !

my brain is spinning out of control with layout ideas, what kind of rugs we will get, where the heck will i store stuff?, how will i create room separation?, how can i make arian's ginormous tv look good?...you know, the usual. my boyfriend and i are moving this weekend to the Arts District. Barker Block to be exact! and we are counting the minutes until then!! I will probably be blogging and asking you guys, ummm does this couch work there? no? ok how about heeeere? so get ready for that journey. and here is the space! it's 1100 square feet and those "closets" need curtains fo sho. i have never lived with a boyyyy before, so i suppose it is a mighty big step. wish us luck!

it's a fabulous space and i'm sure you will do wonderful things with it. i do understand about having too many ideas to want to play around with and that can be overwhelming. good luck and i look forward to seeing your upcoming posts about it.

Good luck, Bri!! You guys are going to have so much fun. I live in a loft downtown with my boyfriend and we've had to get rid of a ton of our stuff. You'll realize that once you don't use it at least once a week, it isn't worth it to keep. Sad, but true. I can't wait to see how you decorate it! Any tips for concrete walls would be much appreciated - ours are still bare!

i have lived in a loft (with only 1 teeny closet) for almost 4 yrs, doubt I could ever go back to walls again...my advice, height is your friend! USE IT! stuff u don't use everyday? up high!, stuff you use alot? reachable...get a great ladder! (your space is gorg!) enjoy it!

ooo ladder! yesss!!

That is so awesome Bri! Is there an ikea anywhere near you? they tend to have awesome storage solutions and so does the container store.

What an amazing space - I can't wait to see what you do with it! I wish I could give you advice on loft living, but I share a huge house with a bunch of roommates and we are packrats. lol.

Congrats on this huge step! I recently moved in with my bf, and so far it's been wonderful. :)

Oh wow! What an awesome space! I love the modern, cleaning styling of the place! I'm excited to seen how everything turns out once you move in. Ive been living with my bf for almost a year now - I was nervous about it in the beginning, but it's been so much fun!!

what about a big flag? It's graphic, it could appeal to both a guy and a girl, give some texture to a bare wall and could be sentimental depending on the state/country. Plus you could probably find an inexpensive version on ebay or at the flea.

bri. said...

i like that flag idea!

Yes! I was going to recommend high floating shelves for storage. Put stuff you don't use all the time in pretty boxes or even white plain boxes and "hide" them where your eyes can't reach. I love your new place, it's very amazing!!! Dividing spaces with your furniture, rugs, flags, etc will be lots of fun - you will see!!!

Wowie! What a fantastic space! Going along with *bluedogz design's suggestion, using height....I always support the use of a good pulley system. If you have a bike or two, make a lift, and besides functionality...it will make an interesting design statement. You can pick up retro hardware from industrial and architectural salvage stores, and use some funky colour waxed rope. Looking forward to seeing the space evolve!

Cheers

suggestion:

1. i move to LA
2. we go shopping
3. we decorate
4. we consume mass amounts of champagne and throw parties in your new awesome space

please :)

ps - one huge awesome piece of artwork is absolutely necessary.

i like the open space but, don´t like the big metallic pipes on the sealing, very strange. i would give the space a little bit color, like smooth yellow to make it warmer, because the grey makes it look like very cold and yellow looks good with grey. and do i see that good? is the bedroom behind the kitchen and all open? hhhmmm you are going to get problems with the food smells in your bedroom, so yeah put some nice fabric on the closet for your clothes not to smell like food and maybe in between the bedroom and kitchen wall put a window for the funny smells not to pass true and for not loosing the light. enjoy and have fun!!

such an amazing space! congrats!

Mercedes said...

ah! and put the tv in the dark corner where you have the telefone, so light wont bother on the tv and the sofa on the left side of the window so you can still look at the nice view, don´t put the back of the sofa to the window or to the door it is bad feng shui, but put it with the back to the wall but with just a bit space in between or that you can just walk around it. hhhmmm i hope i´m not interfering to much but i love designing spaces!

love love love your new space! can't wait to see more.

i have actually been seeing a lot of open closets where you display your prettiest clothes and shoes and i really like it. i would try that and then maybe put the clothes you don't want on display in a dresser or something. and i only suggest this to you because i am sure your wardrobe would be very pretty and fun to look at!

it looks like it has tooonz of potential. I absolutly love all the exposed piping. i actually wrote recently about working with the natural elements of a space on http://www.qualitybath.com/blog/design-inspiration/modern-decorating-colors-and-architecture-101/. Cant wait to see what you do in here!

Cez said...

wow..great space and volumes!!!! you absolutely need one of my paintings!!! LOL... ;o))))

jackie said...

beautiful! nothing more exciting than a huge amount of empty space with tons of potential.

it would be awesome to the space draped in fabrics and other textures to warm it up, since it's a loft and has tons of industrial elements (stainless steel and concrete). nubby rugs, graphic curtains/wallpaper, and wood elements.

storage-wise, floor-to-ceiling pieces as mentioned by bluedogz and dani. if you're up to it: http://www.the-brick-house.com/2009/09/shelving-unit.html. also, you've probably already seen it, but emily did an awesome job with a loft: http://www.stylebyemilyhenderson.com/blog/episode-2-more-secrets.html (for sources on shopping, etc.)

can't wait to see your decorating progress, whichever way you chose to go! :D

What an amazeballs space. Lucky girl! This really makes me miss our loft in New York.

And I second Cassandra's comment -- and totally wanna tag along!

p.s. I am sure living with the boy will be so much fun...Just keep in mind the beginning part is the toughest adjustment period. Once you're over that, it's gravy. ;)

eek! I love EVERYTHING. I agree with an oversized, bold piece of art. Something that makes a statement. (don't you love how vague I'm being?) I can't wait to see what you do with it! I know that it'll be great.

This is unreal and looks incredible. It's pretty much my dream life to live in an awesome loft in California, so enjoy it!! : )

You will have the time of your life with this lovely place!
I am with Jackie: go for texture with all kind of textiles. But most of all: use bright colours to create accents. I might be bold but I would paint the exposed pipeworks in all different colours... like an interior Centre Pompidou, you know? I think it would look amazing :D

what an AMAZING (!!!) place. lucky you! life can only become great in such a spot. my tipp: take your time, look for great pieces and don't buy lot of cheap and in the end useless stuff at IKEA or somewhere cheap only because you think you have to been done with moving and unpacking as fast as possible! enjoy!

Oh this is just making me miss my old dtla loft! Guess I'll just have to re-live it vicariously through you while in London.

The one piece that is VERY helpful to have in a loft is a bookcase divider. You get storage + a freestanding wall. It's not the most original thing in the book but people have them for a reason - they work! Just put your personal touches on the shelves and you're golden!
