with the spooky spirit upon us all, i’ve been inspired to share a few of my favorite ghoulish records! so here we go...-dana

1.
“i put a spell on you” (nina simone) – originally written & performed by screamin’ jay hawkins in 1956, “i put a spell on you” was then covered by nina simone in ‘65, giving this timeless record the credit it deserved. simone sings it like she means it. no matter how many times i listen to the track, it still manages to maintain a bit of mystery.

2. “somebody’s watching me” (rockwell) – this 1980s classic contains a hook that’s both memorable and infectious with enough energy to get an entire party moving. a playlist must for anyone hosting their own black & orange bash this weekend.

3. “black magic woman” (santana) – there’s something incredibly beautiful about the way santana utilizes a guitar. originally written & performed by fleetwood mac, this particular record does just that, adding a dash of spice and a touch of spook. another must to make your october 31st a night to remember.

sometimes i ask myself questions like, "hey bri, who's your favorite model?" then i think about it.

hmmm...sasha, no wait, Clémence....but what about frida...and you can't forget about emma...but sasha is so fairy-like. ugh i give up, this is too hard. guess what bri, you dont actually have to answer the question so quit stressin, it's a made up question to yourself. oh yeah.

today, sasha wins:

the instant i put these black leather shorts on my body and zipped 'em up real high, i felt real sassy. i paired them with a lightweight vintage striped top that I tied in the front to display the shape of the shorts, and some thigh highs i picked up at urban outfitters a while back. on my feet were my most favorite michael kors black platforms that i wear with just about everything.

now, i feel like shorts like this can often lean in the unflattering direction, am i right? oh no, not these ones! they have the perfect pleats, and the comfiest leather that you never want to take off. these are designed by the ever so talented costume designer, terri king for a company called v-moda.

want your own? they are available at kin on sunset blvd.

1.
“crazy for you” (adele) – i believe that sometimes the best production on a track is the one that takes the least amount of effort. “crazy for you” is a great example of that – a stripped song, showcasing a simple guitar & the eccentric range that is adele’s voice. day or night, this song is one of the highlights of adele’s debut album, 19.

2. “what a wonderful world” (louis armstrong) – a timeless classic played at weddings, graduations, celebrations of all kinds. this particular song (compliments of louis’ inviting voice) embodies what life should really be about. stop sweating the small stuff, and remember that it’s who in our lives that count, not what. because after all, we truly live in a wonderful world.

3. “i’ll be seeing you” (billie holiday) – one of the biggest, if not “the” biggest female influence of jazz music, billie holiday saw musical success from the 30s all the way through to the mid-1950s. her version of “i’ll be seeing you” is both soothing and uplifting at the same time. pair with a glass of well-aged red and let yourself go.

Mary Louise Brooks demands attention with that harsh bobbed haircut & her remarkable flapper style. This 1920/30's silent film star + dancer is a true example of a style icon!

yes, you probably should be her for halloween. think about it.

who wants to start a riot? are you feeling real rowdy? okay, here is the plan. we go over to jen's house with a lot of angry signs, a few packs of polaroid film and tell her that if she doesn't start blogging on my polaroid blog right this very instant then we are going to be forced to steal her dog phillip. i think it will work. she really likes that dog. now, who's with me!?

and it's her birthday, so today you are allowed to be nice to her. happy birthday j, quit hiding from us!
